The last chemistry class before the semester break was spent listening to Senior Lecturer Anna Malyshenko from IMC Krems University of Applied Sciences. Her lecture on the role of chemistry in addressing societal challenges such as climate change and plastic pollution showed students that there are many ways in which chemistry can contribute to a more sustainable future. Practical examples discussed included the role of biopolymers, demonstrated through a live experiment, as well as the waste-to-product ratio in ibuprofen production. Catalysts, solvents, and toxicity were just some of the new chemical vocabulary that the class took away from Ms. Malyshenko’s lecture, which was, of course, delivered in English. For 7D, this was also a great opportunity to experience a university-style lecture and to learn about job opportunities in the STEM field.
